How do I create an MITx Online account?

If you do not already have an MITx Online account, then you must create one before you can enroll in any MITx Online courses. Follow the text- or screenshot-based instructions below to create your account.

 

Important Note: The MITx Online platform is now part of the MIT Learn system. The account creation and login processes now use MIT Learn, so you will see "MIT Learn" branding and logos instead of the "MITx Online" ones.

MIT Learn is a new, single portal for all non-degree learning from MIT Open Learning—including the MITx Online platform and others. In time, all of this content will be centralized in MIT Learn—but for now, you will still use the MITx Online site to enroll in courses and your MITx Online Dashboard to manage your enrollments and access your courses.

 

Text-Based Instructions

Create a new account

  1. Navigate to the MITx Online Homepage at https://mitxonline.mit.edu/
  2. Click the "Login" button in the top right corner of the window
  3. On the next page, "MIT Learn Log in", click the "Sign Up" link below the "Next" button
  4. Follow the prompts and enter your information to create your MIT Learn/MITx Online account; you must provide:
    • Your Full Name
    • Your email address
    • A Password
    • and complete a reCAPTCHA to prove you're a human
  5. After you've entered your information, click the "Sign Up" button. The platform will send you a verification message at the email address you provided
  6. Check your email account for your Verification Message and click the "Verify Your Email" button/link to continue. A new browser window will open, asking you to "Confirm validity" of your email address. Click the link to proceed
    • You should receive the verification message within a few minutes, but it can sometimes take longer. If you can't find your verification message, try checking your account's "Spam", "Junk", or other autosorting folders. Automated emails like this one can sometimes get caught in those locations
  7. You can now log in to your account — but you're not quite finished yet!

 

Log in to your new account to complete the process

  1. Log in to your new MITx Online account
  2. Enter your email address and click the "Next" button, then enter your password and click "Next" again
  3. Provide some additional "Profile Information", and click the "Continue" button when finished
    • All of these fields are required — you must provide this information to complete your account
    • First Name (your given/personal name; the name you want to be addressed by in emails)
    • Last Name (your surname/family name)
    • Full Name (how you want your name displayed on your certificates)
    • Public Username (the name you want to identify you in courses—for example in the forums)
      • Caution: choose your Public Username carefully; it must be unique and it cannot be changed later
    • Country (the country in which you reside)
    • Year of Birth
  4. Finally, you will be asked to provide some additional information "About You". Click the "Submit" button when ready to complete your account profile
    • All of these fields are optional — you do not need to provide any of this information
    • Highest Level of Education
    • Primary role(s): Student, Educator, Professional, Other
      • If you select "Professional", you may optionally also provide additional information about your professional life

Congratulations! Your MITx Online/MIT Learn account and profile have been fully set up.

You will be taken to your MITx Online Dashboard automatically, and you can now enroll in courses on the MITx Online platform. Explore courses with the MITx Online Catalog
