The MIT Learn / MITx Online Learning Platform is designed to display Green Checkmarks within the Courseware to serve as an indicator of which parts of the Course Content you have already seen and completed, and help you locate content you may have missed.
Unfortunately, however, the Green Checkmarks are not 100% reliable, and they don't always appear as expected. There are a number of reasons why this can happen, some of which aren't obvious or intuitive. For example, any time that the Course Team updates any part of a course (to fix a link, or a typo, or update a video, etc.), the platform resets the Green Checkmark(s) associated with the changed Courseware for all learners.
| The Green Checkmarks are intended to serve as a helpful guide only. They do not affect your Course Score in any way. |
Where Do The Green Checkmarks Appear?
You will see the Green Checkmarks appear in several places, including:
- On the Courseware's Course Page (the "Course Outline"), next to each completed section and sub-section
- On the Courseware Navigation Bar, next to each completed Courseware Page
- On Courseware Pages, below each submitted Coursework Problem that is correct
See below for screenshots showing the Green Checkmarks in context.
How Do The Green Checkmarks Work?
While the Green Checkmarks do not indicate or impact your Course Score in any way, if it's important to you to have all of the possible checkmarks appear, you should be able to trigger them by ensuring that the basic completion criteria is met for every Courseware Page.
|
Important Note: There are certain situations in which it is not possible to make the Green Checkmark appear for a piece of Course Content. For example, if you join a course session after the due date has passed for a piece of Coursework, you will never be able to submit that Coursework—and consequently, the Green Checkmark can never appear for either the Coursework Problem itself, or the Courseware Page and Section it resides within. |
In general, a Green Checkmark to appear for a Courseware Page when: an answer has been submitted for every Coursework Problem on the page, every video on the page has been played until the very end, the entire page has been viewed for at least 5 seconds, and you have moved to a different Courseware Page (with the "Next" or "Previous" buttons in the Navigation Bar).
A Green Checkmark will appear on the Course Page (the "Course Outline") for a Courseware Section once all of the Courseware Pages it contains have Green Checkmarks.
If you still have problems triggering the Green Checkmark for specific pages, follow the troubleshooting steps below.
What To Do If A Green Checkmark Isn't Appearing
If you've completed a Courseware Page and expect to see a Green Checkmark, but no check appears, try the following steps:
First, ensure that:
- You have submitted an answer for every Problem on the page (not just saved an answer)
- Note: This includes every item with a "Submit" button, even ungraded "practice" and optional problems
- You have watched every video on the page until the very end (when it stops automatically)
- Note: You need not rewatch entire videos. It's enough to move the video's progress indicator near the end and let it play until it stops
Then, do the following:
- Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the Courseware Page, until you can't scroll any further
- Wait for at least 5 seconds (we recommend waiting 10 seconds, to be sure)
- Click the "Next" or "Previous" buttons on the sides of the Courseware Navigation Bar — the Green Checkmark can't appear until you leave the current Courseware Page
If, after completing all of these steps, you still don't see a Green Checkmark appear for the Courseware Page, then please reach out to the Support Team, using the Contact Us button at the bottom of the Courseware.
